Cortona Voices, sponsored by the City of Cortona, is proud to present the First International Choir Competition 'Città di Cortona' dedicated to non-professional choral groups, taking place on October 3-7, 2018.
During the competition, every choir will have the opportunity to perform in live concerts in wonderful and historical locations.

The competition is directed toward the following categories of choral ensembles:

  • Category A – Mixed-voice choirs
  • Category B – All-female equal-voice choirs
  • Category C – All-male equal-voice choirs

First Round

Choirs must perform 3 free polyphonic pieces composed in the Renaissance, Romantic and Contemporary periods (composed after 1950). All pieces should be performed in their original language. Transposition and/or any other version(s) of the contest piece is not allowed. The use of the piano or organ is only allowed if the original score requires it. The total duration of the performance should not exceed 20 minutes.


The following categories will be admitted to the finals held on Sunday, October 7, 2018 at 5 pm:

  • 3 Choirs from Category A
  • 3 Choirs from Category B
  • 3 Choirs from Category C

Choirs must perform a piece of their choice for a total duration of no more than 25 minutes. All pieces should be performed in their original language. Transposition and/or any other version/s of the contest piece is not allowed. The use of the piano or organ is only allowed if the original score requires it.


  • All non-professional choirs are eligible to take part in this competition.
  • Registration fee is 200 € per choir for all three categories.
  • Deadline to enroll is June 31, 2018.
  • When enrolling, choirs must send the digital copies of the scores in PDF format and specify which category they intend to compete in, along with a CV of the choir and its conductor.
  • All scores must be sent by email to together with the 200 € payment receipt to Associazione Cortona Voices
  • The first selections will take place on October Thursday 4, Friday 5 and Saturday 6. The order of the choirs' performances will be announced by the end of August 2018.
  • The opening ceremony will take place on Tuesday, October 3 at 9 pm in the presence of competition authorities. All choirs are required to be present.
  • The finals will be held on Sunday, October 7 at 5pm. The awards ceremony will be held on the same day at 9pm with the winner’s performance for each category.
  • The closing of the competition will take place at the Signorelli Theater with the singing of the choral piece "Halleluja" from The Messiah by G. F. Haendel.
  • The choirs will participate as guests in various concerts organized by Cortona Voices throughout the provincial territory on Thursday, October 4, Friday, October 5, and Saturday, October 6.
  • By applying, all choirs agree to the rules and conditions of the competition, including accommodations, meals and bus transfers organized by Cortona Voices. For hotel accommodations, we advise you to contact Mrs. Maria Vittoria Paci at, who can provide you with additional information on prices according to your individual needs. Upon making your logistical arrangements, you will be required to pay 30% of the services provided.

The Jury

  • The Jury consists of well-known personalities from the international music world and is presided over by the chairman of Cortona Voices, who will be present without the right to vote. In his absence, the Jury will nominate a President by electing one of its members.
  • The Jury consists of five judges.
  • Each choir is judged in its category according to the following parameters: intonation, rhythm, vocal setting, dynamics, interpretation.
  • Each member of the jury will give an evaluation from 0 to 100. The scores obtained will be subject to the Jury's verification and approval at a special meeting.
  • Based on the score obtained, each choir will be placed in one of the following:
    • Absolute first place with a score from 98 to 100
    • First place with a score from 94 to 97
    • Second place with a score from 89 to 93
    • Third place with a score from 88 to 84
  • Decisions by the jury are final and cannot be contested.
  • At the end of the competition, each choir will be assigned a judge for a technical review and analysis on the results obtained.


All participating choirs will be awarded with:

  • A certificate of participation
  • A memorial plate
  • A photo
  • A cup will be awarded to the top three performers of each category
  • The absolute winner of all categories will be awarded a € 1,000 prize

The Jury may also award special prizes for the following categories:

  • Most original group
  • Best interpretation of a contemporary piece
  • Most interesting program

There is also a special award granted by the audience's votes during the concerts.
